Ehrlichiosis is caused by Ehrlichia bacteria, which are transmitted through tick bites. Some strains affect only dogs (Ehrlichia canis). Symptoms in dogs include: Loss of appetite, fatigue, bruising or abnormal bleeding.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by black-legged (deer) ticks. Symptoms in dogs: Fever, lameness & joint swelling, lethargy, decreased appetite, swollen lymph nodes.
Anaplasmosis is caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum and is transmitted by the same ticks that spread Lyme disease. Symptoms in dogs: Lameness & joint pain, fever, lethargy & loss of appetite, less common: vomiting, diarrhea, labored breathing, seizures.
Heartworm disease is caused by Dirofilaria immitis, a parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. Symptoms in dogs: Coughing, difficulty breathing, fatigue & reluctance to exercise, weight loss.
